WBB Dancing To Columbia For Matchup With Michigan State
March 17, 2024 | Women's Basketball
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – For the fourth year in a row and the 31st time in program history, the North Carolina women's basketball team is dancing its way into the NCAA Tournament. The Tar Heels are seeded eighth in the Albany 1 region and will face ninth-seeded Michigan State Friday in a first-round game at Colonial Life Arena in Columbia, S.C.
Â
The Tar Heels and Spartans tip off at 11:30 a.m. in the opening game of first-round play. At 2 p.m., host South Carolina faces the winner of the First Four game between Presbyterian and Sacred Heart. Friday's winners meet in the second round on Sunday with the time still TBA.
The UNC team gathered for Sunday evening's announcement at coach Courtney Banghart's home, crowding on the couch to catch the news on ESPN. With host South Carolina as the No. 1 overall seed, the Tar Heels didn't have to wait long to hear their name called. UNC was just the third line of the bracket to get filled in and when it did, the room erupted in cheers.
Â
UNC is 4-1 all-time against the Spartans, but the teams haven't met since the 2013-14 season. That year they faced off in a second-round NCAA Tournament game in Chapel Hill, with fourth-seeded Carolina beating fifth-seeded Michigan State 62-53.
Â
"There are a lot of teams that aren't in the NCAA Tournament," Banghart said. "We recognize how hard it is to make it and are thrilled to be in the version of 2024."
Â
The Tar Heels (19-12) are 50-29 all-time in NCAA play, with a national championship in 1994 and Final Fours in 1994, 2006 and 2007.
Â
UNC is one of eight programs with 30 or more NCAA Tournament appearances.
Â
Friday's game will air on ESPN2.
