Baseball Blanks UNCW For 20th Consecutive Home Win
March 19, 2024 | Baseball
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – North Carolina won its 20th consecutive home game behind Olin Johnson's four innings of two-hit ball and Parks Harber's three RBI, defeating UNCW 11-0 Tuesday in a seven-inning, run-ruled game.
It's the sixth time in school history that the Tar Heels (18-4) have won 20 or more consecutive games at Boshamer Stadium.
Luke Stevenson collected three hits, and Casey Cook and Vance Honeycutt had two RBIs each.
"It was good to see Olin settle in and show everyone what he is capable of doing," UNC head coach Scott Forbes said. "I thought we played a complete game. We got distribution throughout the lineup. Anytime you beat a team like UNCW mid-week, it's a great win."
Johnson (1-0), a freshman from Bellingham, Wash., earned his first win in Carolina Blue allowing a pair of singles. He struck out four, doubling his total to eight in 11 2/3 innings.
Connor Bovair pitched 2 1/3 innings and struck out five of seven batters.
"He was outstanding," Forbes said. "Here's a guy who was a weekend starter for us last year that we need to be good and to be a weapon out of our bullpen. He was really good tonight."
The Tar Heels' pitchers held UNCW (11-10) to four singles, while striking out nine and walking just one.
Cyle Phelan (0-3) pitched one inning and allowed two runs, two hits, and two walks.
Carolina scored four runs in the second to go up 6-0 on three hits, three walks, and an error. Stevenson doubled to lead off the inning, and Gavin Gallaher drove him in with a single through the left side. Honeycutt and Alberto Osuna each drew a bases loaded walk, and Honeycutt scored on an error.
Harber had a two-run single in the third, and Cook ripped a two-run single to left-center in the fourth, with a third run scoring on an error by the left fielder.
Harber and Honeycutt each drove in a run in the first.
The Tar Heels return to ACC play with a Coastal Division series against Georgia Tech at Boshamer Stadium this weekend. Game one of the series is scheduled for Friday, March 22, at 6 p.m.
