Quick takeaways from the rematch with NC State.
By Adam Lucas
1. Big second half for the Tar Heels, turning an eight-point deficit into a 79-70 win over NC State.
2. They did it by tightening down the defense. After State hit at nearly a 60 percent clip in the first half, the Tar Heels limited them to 22.2 percent from the field and 2-for-8 (25 percent) from three in the second half.
3. What a luxury to have a player like Harrison Ingram not be your first option. On a day when RJ Davis was limited to 4-for-11 and Armando Bacot was 4-for-12, Ingram scored 22 points and grabbed six rebounds.
4. It felt like Elliot Cadeau was up to the challenge of an intense game also. He handed out seven assists to go with his 15 points, and was instrumental during the stretch when Carolina expanded the lead to double digits during the second half.
5. Not much secret to that first half. DJ Horne shot 7-for-12 on his way to 16 points. The Tar Heels tried a series of defenders on him, including Cormac Ryan and Seth Trimble, but once he got hot, he didn't miss.
6. That was part of a half in which the Wolfpack shot 57.6 percent from the field and 63.6 percent from the three-point line. They seemed extraordinarily pleased with themselves, celebrating on the Smith Center court as they took their eight-point lead into the break. It turned out, however, that the game was comprised of two halves.
7. One of the lone highlights from those first 20 minutes: Elliot Cadeau threw one of the passes of the season in transition, hitting a sprinting Harrison Ingram through two State defenders for a layup. To have the vision to see Ingram was great; to have the ability to throw the pass was extraordinary. Cadeau battled a leg injury for much of the game that had athletic trainer Doug Halverson working on him throughout the afternoon.
8. Ryan's defense on Horne was important in the second half. Running through a parade of screens and with contact on basically every play, Ryan was the primary defender limiting Horne to 1-for-7 in the second half. Even better, Horne attempted just one three-pointer as the Tar Heels did an excellent job of keeping State off the arc.
9. The game was called completely differently in the two halves. After whistling ten fouls total in the first half, the ACC crew whistled 17 total fouls in the first 10:09 of the second half. That's a dramatic departure. Carolina took advantage, though, fouling Casey Morsell out of the game, sending DJ Burns to the bench with foul trouble, and shooting 23-for-27 at the free throw line.
11. Great to see Antawn Jamison, Phil Ford and Bobby Jones at the game, among a host of lettermen that included Shammond Williams, Dante Calabria, Pete Chilcutt, Marcus Ginyard, Dewey Burke and several others. Jones was at his first game since the 2019-20 game, and received a big ovation when he was shown on the video board as part of the program honoring the 50th anniversary of the eight points in 17 seconds comeback against Duke 50 years ago today.
12. Carolina now has 166 wins against NC State, more than any opponent in the program's history.
13. UNC is now 82-23 against State in Chapel Hill and 31-7 against the Pack in the Smith Center.
14. The Tar Heels are 38-6 in the last 44 games against State and 55-13 against them in the last 32 seasons.
15. Fun note from Jody Zeugner: this is the 50th season since David Thompson played at State. Since then, State has beaten Carolina a total of 27 times out of 113 attempts. That means they are 27-86 against their most hated rival, a winning percentage of .239, over the last half-century.
16. Quick reminder that Tuesday is senior night at the Smith Center. With a 7 p.m. tipoff, traffic in and around Chapel Hill, including on 40, will be problematic. Fans are strongly encouraged to be in their seats by no later than 6:30 to honor a very important senior class. The Tip Off Club will be cranking outside the Smith Center beginning at 5 p.m., so the easiest solution if you can manage it with work scheduling is to just get to Chapel Hill by then, enjoy some socializing and beverages, and have an easy walk across the sidewalk to the game.
