Rowing Brings Home Cup After Windy Weekend In DC
April 13, 2024 | Women's Rowing
WASHINGTON, D.C. – The UNC rowing team battled through uncertainty to find success at the GW Invitational Friday and Saturday, with each Tar Heel boat picking up a win and the varsity eight claiming the Class of 2006 Cup.
Because of windy conditions on the Potomac River both Friday and Saturday, the fours weren't able to race at all and the Tar Heel eights each raced just twice, instead of the three times as scheduled. Carolina's third varsity eight beat host George Washington on Friday afternoon, and the first and second varsity eights both came out on top of Georgetown on Saturday morning.
"We have to give a ton of credit to all the athletes who competed this weekend," UNC coach Erin Neppel said. "Conditions were extremely difficult and unstable, and there were a lot of schedule changes to try and make the most of it and get some racing in. The team did an excellent job staying in FlexMode. They were positive, loose and focused, and we ended up with some good results overall, especially in the 3V yesterday and the 1V and 2V today to take home the Class of 2006 Cup. We're proud of the team and how they handled themselves."
Next up for the Tar Heels is their first close-to-home race of the season, the Lake Wheeler Invitational on April 26 and 27 in Raleigh.
