April 17, 2024 | Softball
LYNCHBURG, Va. – The North Carolina softball team improved to 28-14 on Wednesday afternoon with a 2-1 victory at Liberty.
Senior pitcher Talia Hannappel earned her first win of the season in her first start of the year, recording her first victory since March 14, 2023, at Coastal Carolina. The Tar Heel defense came in clutch, turning a pair of double plays, including one that clinched the win in the seventh.
In her first start in four games due to injury, freshman Sanaa Thompson hit the sole home run of the game, a solo shot in the top of the fourth into left field. The home run was her fifth of the season and first since March 10 vs. Virginia. With a team-best two hits in the game, she now also has 13 career multi-hit games.
The Tar Heels used three pitchers in the victory: Hannappel, senior Bailey McCachren and sophomore Kenna Raye Dark.
McCachren allowed no hits in 1.1 innings of work, while Dark earned her second save of the season, recording the last three outs.
Up next, the Tar Heels return home to host Louisville in a three-game Atlantic Coast Conference series, starting Friday at 5 p.m.
