Softball Cliches Louisville Series With Doubleheader Sweep

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The Carolina softball team swept its doubleheader with Louisville on Saturday afternoon in dramatic fashion, earning a 9-1 six-inning run-rule victory in game one, before coming back from six runs down to take a 7-6 victory in the series finale.
With the pair of victories over the Cardinals, the Tar Heels clinched its fifth ACC series win of the season and improve to 5-0 in series-deciding games.
Talia Hannappel earned her first complete game victory in game one, allowing just one run and two hits in six innings of work. The only Louisville run of the game came from a solo home run in the top of the sixth inning.
Autumn Owen went a team-best 3-of-4 at the plate with three RBIs, while Destiny Middleton had a pair of hits. In her only at-bat of the game, Aneshia Jordan hit an RBI triple, the first triple of her career and first career hit for extra bases.
In game two, the Cardinals took a 6-0 lead, plating all six runs via the long ball, hitting one in the top of the second and three in the fifth.
The Tar Heels cut into the lead in the bottom of the sixth, with Owen and Middleton each tallying an RBI to make it 6-2.
Carolina opened the bottom of the seventh with back-to-back hits from Carlie Myrtle and Carsyn Snead, putting runners on first and second. Skyler Brooks plated the first run of the game with an RBI groundout to make it 6-3 with two outs.
Down to the final out of the game, Abby Settlemyre and Owen hit back-to-back home runs to even it up a 6-all.
Sanaa Thompson then singled to center field, before Middleton plated her with an RBI single to left field to clinch the series.
Middleton went 5-of-7 at the plate on Saturday.
In the circle, Janelle Wilson (2-1) took the game two win, pitching 2.1 innings of scoreless relief, allowing just two hits and a walk.
The Tar Heels now have series wins over Virginia, Georgia Tech, Notre Dame, Pitt and Louisville.
Up next, Carolina hosts ECU on Tuesday at 5 p.m. at Anderson Stadium.
