CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Point guard Grace Townsend will join the UNC women's basketball program as a transfer student-athlete, head coach Courtney Banghart announced on Tuesday. Townsend has spent the past four years at the University of Richmond, where she averaged 13.5 points and 5.2 assists per game for the Spiders in 2023-24.
Â
"In the transfer portal, you hunt the perfect add, the player that can provide value and contribute in the most meaningful ways," Banghart said. "Grace is a proven winner and an impactful competitor, and she and her family will be the perfect add to the Carolina family."
Â
A three-year starter, Townsend played in a total of 118 games during her Richmond career, averaging 10.5 points and 4.7 assists over that span. As a senior, she led the Spiders in assists and steals and ranked second in scoring as the team went 29-6 overall and won the first Atlantic 10 championship in program history. Townsend earned A10 All-Conference, All-Tournament and All-Academic honors.
Â
She is working toward a double major in political science and philosophy, politics, economics & law (PPEL) and will graduate from Richmond in May with her undergraduate degree.
Â
Townsend is from Midlothian, Va., and is a graduate of James River High School, where she twice earned all-state honors and served as team captain. In addition to basketball, she lettered four years in track and set a school record in the long jump.
Â
"I picked UNC because it felt like the right fit instantly," Townsend said. "I had such genuine conversations with the coaches and the players. Everyone welcomed me with open arms and it is everything I was looking for."
