May 8, 2024 | Baseball
Six Tar Heels drove in multiple runs, with Anthony Donofrio and Colby Wilkerson collecting three, while Honeycutt, Casey Cook, Alberto Osuna, and Jackson Van De Brake had two.
Freshman Luke Stevenson recorded the first four-hit game of his career, going 4-for-5 with a double, RBI, and four runs. Van De Brake had a season-high three hits, stole two bases, scored three runs, and drove in two more.
UNC (36-11) scored four runs in the second to open a 6-1 lead. Osuna, Cook, and Donofrio each registered a two-run hit in the first two innings. The Tar Heels added another run in the bottom of the third after Campbell (27-20) scored two in the top half.
The Camels scored five runs across the fourth and fifth innings to take an 8-7 lead. Peyton Bonds and Jackson Thompson homered, and Dalen Thompson, Reed Stallman, and Lawson Harrill each had a two-out RBI.
The Tar Heels retook the lead with two runs in the fifth, but Campbell answered with a run in the sixth to tie the game.
"Our guys just kept playing," UNC head coach Scott Forbes said. "[Campbell] took the lead, but our guys kept their composure and just kept playing.
"That was a really good team win."
Johnny Castagnozzi reached on a dropped fly ball by Harrill and sprinted to third base to start the bottom of the sixth. Donofrio then drove him in to break the tie. After Osuna reached, Stevenson, Van De Brake, and Wilkerson each drove in a run before Honeycutt launched his 19th home run of the season to put Carolina ahead 15-9.
Honeycutt is one home run shy of tying the program's career record of 57.
The teams combined for 99 plate appearances and 33 hits, with the Camels outhitting the Tar Heels 19-14.
