Olympic Group Stage Continues For Women’s Soccer
July 28, 2024 | Women's Soccer
PARIS, France – The United States posted a big 4-1 win over Germany on Sunday, July 28, in its second match of the 2024 Olympic Games to maintain its place at the top of Group B standings with six points. Team USA has now secured its spot in the knockout stage.
New Zealand suffered a 2-0 loss to Colombia in Group A, its second defeat of the Games. The Football Ferns now shift their focus to the final group stage matches on Wednesday, July 31. The top two teams from each of the three groups, along with the two best third-place finishers, will advance to the knockout rounds.
Three former North Carolina women's soccer standouts – New Zealand's Katie Bowen and the United States' Crystal Dunn and Emily Fox – are competing for Olympic gold in France.
Once again wearing the captain's armband, Bowen logged a full match inside Lyon Stadium in Décines-Carpieu. Dunn and Fox also played every minute at Marseille Stadium in Marseille as all three former Tar Heels have played every minute of their respective games thus far.
Bowen (2012-15) is representing New Zealand in her fourth Olympic Games. The defender is the reigning New Zealand and Women's International Player of the Year and was an alternate in 2012 before making the 18-person roster the past three Olympiads.
Now with 12 Olympic appearances, Dunn (2010-13) is one of just three three-time Olympians on the United States' roster. The forward earned bronze at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and scored a goal in 2016 in Rio. Dunn reached her 150th USWNT cap in the Olympic opener on July 25.
Making her Olympic debut for Team USA is defender Fox (2017-19). Fox, who is one of nine first-time Olympians on Team USA, has now made 52 caps for the red, white and blue.
