Olympic Champions! Dunn, Fox Win Gold With USWNT
August 10, 2024 | Women's Soccer
PARIS, France – Former Tar Heel standouts Crystal Dunn and Emily Fox are Olympic champions!
The United States defeated Brazil, 1-0, in the final of the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. The win put an end to the USWNT's 12-year gold medal drought, with the last Olympic gold coming in 2012 in London. Team USA now has five Olympic gold medals in women's soccer.
Playing in her third Olympic Games, Dunn now adds a gold to match her bronze medal from 2021 in Tokyo. Fox brings home the gold medal in her first Olympics.
Team USA advanced to the gold medal match following its 1-0 win over Germany in the semifinal, which came after another 1-0 victory against Japan in the quarterfinals. Dunn had the game-winning assist in the quarterfinals.
The USWNT secured its spot in the knockout rounds after sweeping Group B. Its spot in the quarterfinals was clinched after a big 4-1 win over Germany followed by a 2-1 win against Australia. The stars and stripes opened its Olympic campaign with a 3-0 shutout against Zambia.
Now with 16 Olympic appearances, Dunn (2010-13) was one of just three three-time Olympians on the United States' roster. The forward earned bronze at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and scored a goal in 2016 in Rio. Her 20th career USWNT assist came in the quarterfinals against Japan.
Making her Olympic debut for Team USA was defender Fox (2017-19). Fox, who was one of nine first-time Olympians on the USWNT, has now made 56 caps for the red, white and blue.
Another former UNC standout in Katie Bowen competed in Paris while representing New Zealand. Wearing the captain's armband, Bowen played a full 90 minutes in all three of her Olympic games as New Zealand went 0-3 in group stage play.
Bowen (2012-15) represented New Zealand in her fourth Olympic Games. She is the reigning New Zealand and Women's International Player of the Year and was an alternate in 2012 before making the 18-person roster the past three Olympiads.
