Men's Fencing, Women's Tennis Celebrate Academic Excellence

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – A pair of Atlantic Coast Conference championship teams added more honors recently as UNC women's tennis and men's fencing were recognized with the Carolina Academic Excellence Award – given each year to the men's and women's varsity teams with the highest overall grade point averages.

It marked the third time women's tennis has won and the seventh time for men's fencing. Both teams won for the second year in a row.

The Tar Heel teams, along with their coaches and members of the Academic Support Program, gathered at the Carolina Inn on Sept. 10 for a celebratory dinner.

Both squads excelled in competition in 2022-23, winning ACC Championships in their respective sports. For women's tennis it was the 12^th overall and first since 2021. For men's fencing, it was the team's first conference crown since 1980, dating back to the days before the sport once again became a part of the ACC lineup.
