September 25, 2024 | Football
CHAPEL HILL – The semifinalists for the 2024 William V. Campbell Trophy, college football's premier scholar-athlete award, were announced on Wednesday, and among them was Carolina graduate student J.J. Jones.
Â
The Campbell Trophy recognizes an individual as the absolute best in the country for his combined academic success, football performance and exemplary leadership, and the candidates also comprise the pool of nominees for the 2024 NFF National Scholar-Athlete Awards Presented by Fidelity Investments.
Â
Jones has been extremely active in the community during his time in Chapel Hill, making visits to UNC Children's Hospital, going home to speak to the Myrtle Beach High School football team as part of a leadership development series, participating in Table NC to assist with childhood hunger, food access and nutrition, and much more.
Â
On the field, Jones is a three-year starter at wide receiver, having hauled in 85 receptions in 39 games played. The Myrtle Beach native has totaled 1,387 receiving yards and five touchdown catches in his four seasons with the Tar Heels.
Â
Jones has earned All-ACC Academic Team honors once, ACC Honor Roll accolades twice, has been named a Tar Heel Scholar-Athlete twice, and is a Dean's List member, while studying media and journalism.
Â
This year will mark the 66th year of the NFF National Scholar-Athlete Awards Presented by Fidelity Investments, which began in 1959, and the 35th year of the Campbell Trophy, which was added to the program in 1990. The NFF will announce 12-15 finalists on Oct. 23, and each finalist will receive an $18,000 postgraduate scholarship as a member of the 2024 NFF National Scholar-Athlete Class Presented by Fidelity Investments.
