Goals From Sentnor, Dahlien Help Send U.S. To FIFA U20 Round Of 16
September 8, 2024 | Women's Soccer
CALI, Colombia – The United States U20 Youth National Team had a dominant 7-0 win over Paraguay on Saturday night at the 2024 FIFA U20 Women's World Cup in Cali, Colombia, in the Group C finale. Current North Carolina junior Maddie Dahlien as well as former Tar Heel standout Ally Sentnor both scored.
The seven-goal margin was the largest in the USA's U20 Women's World Cup history, eclipsing three previous 6-0 wins. Team USA secured three points to finish in second place in the four-team Group C and advanced to the Round of 16.
Dahlien and Sentnor, along with former UNC star Savy King, are vying for gold at the FIFA U20 World Cup. Dahlien is one of 12 college players on the U.S. U20 roster while Sentnor and King make up two of the eight pros currently playing in the National Women's Soccer League.Â
Wearing the captain's armband, Sentnor notched the stars and stripes' fifth goal in the 52nd minute. Pietra Tordin ran onto a throw-in and drew the attention of four defenders with some smart dribbling in traffic. She then slipped the ball to Sentnor, who was unmarked and scored with a one-time, right-footed shot.
Sentnor is the USA's most-capped player and top scorer with 19 caps and 10 international goals.
The USA's seventh and final goal came from Dahlien in the 83rd minute just eight minutes after subbing in. With time and space near the left sideline, Giana Riley sent a pass behind the Paraguayan defense, where Dahlien was clear to take a touch then guide a low shot inside the right post.
Dahlien has now scored in back-to-back games. She now has six international goals in 11 USYNT caps.Â
Savy King has started all three matches, logging a full 90 minutes against Paraguay. She has 15 USYNT caps as a defender.
Dahlien, King and Sentnor were part of the Concacaf qualifying roster in 2023 that secured the USWYNT's spot in the U-20 World Cup. Already with World Cup experience is King who was on the U-17 roster and Sentnor who played on the U-20 squad, both in 2022. Â
The knockout stage begins on Wednesday, Sept. 11, and the U.S. will face Mexico at 9 p.m. ET in the Round of 16. Team USA was in Group C along with Paraguay, Morocco and defending U20 World Cup champion Spain.
