Women’s Soccer Advances On PKs, 4-3

FORT WORTH, Texas – University of North Carolina women's soccer (13-6-1, 6-4 ACC) went the distance to advance 4-3 on penalties against Texas Tech (14-2-5, 7-1-3 Big 12) Friday evening at Garvey-Rosenthal Soccer Stadium.
The Tar Heels advance to play TCU in the NCAA third round on Sunday at 2 p.m. ET in Fort Worth.
Carolina came out energized from the kickoff. Olivia Thomas quickly found the ball and had a great look in just 30 seconds but missed left.
Texas Tech also took an early shot at the seven-minute mark, but the shot was blocked by UNC. The Tar Heel defense stepped up to hold the Red Raiders without a shot the rest of the first half.
UNC had four more shots but were unable to capitalize leaving the first half scoreless on both sides.
In the 57th minute, Bella Devey dished the ball to Linda Ullmark who danced around her defenders to take a long shot outside the 18-yard box. The sophomore nailed the shot, giving Carolina the lead 1-0. Ullmark's goal marks her seventh of the season.
The Red Raiders countered with a goal just three minutes later to even the score at 1-1.
Carolina took five more shots down the stretch but were unable to net the winning goal forcing overtime. The Tar Heels headed into their first overtime since the 2024 NCAA Quarterfinals.
The Tar Heels had two chances halfway through the first overtime but were unable to record the golden goal.
Both teams played aggressive defense keeping the score at 1-1 forcing a second overtime.
The Tar Heels jumped out early on the offensive end to start the second overtime. Three consecutive shots by UNC failed to meet the back of the net.
Texas Tech took another shot in the 108th minute, but Hannah Johann stepped up to record a save keeping UNC alive.
The game remained knotted at one-all forcing a penalty shootout to decide who advanced. The Tar Heels last went to penalties in the 2019 national championship match.
Johann got the PK's started off on a high note with a save on the first shot from Texas Tech. Kate Faasse then stepped in to take the first shot for the Tar Heels and drilled it into the back right corner of the net.
Carolina would go on to advance after taking penalties 4-3.
