Tigers Trip Tar Heels, 85-65

CLEMSON, S.C.—No. 23 Clemson hit 12 three-pointers and defeated North Carolina, 85-65, on Monday night at Littlejohn Coliseum.
The Tigers, coming off a home win over No. 2 Duke on Saturday night, built an 18-point, first-half lead and weren't significantly threatened the rest of the way.
Carolina dropped its fifth game in its last seven decisions and fell to 14-11 overall this season, 7-6 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Clemson improved to 20-5, 12-2 ACC and won for the eighth time in 12 decisions.
Viktor Lakhin led all scorers with 22 points in the game, including 20 in the first half as the Tigers compiled a big, early lead. It was just the second time in series history a ranked Clemson team played an unranked Tar Heel squad.
RJ Davis led the Tar Heels with 18 points on 8 of 14 shooting. Seth Trimble added 12 points and four rebounds, and Elliot Cadeau had 11 points, six assists and six turnovers.
The Tigers hit 8 of 12 three-pointers as they began to pull away early. Clemson out-rebounded Carolina, 20-9, in the opening 20 minutes and led, 49-33, at halftime. The Tigers held UNC scoreless for over four minutes until Cadeau hit a shot with four seconds left in the half.
After shooting 50 percent collectively in the first half, the Tar Heels shot just 40.6 percent (13 for 32) in the second half, including 2 of 11 from three-point range. The Tigers pounded Carolina on the boards, winning the rebounding battle by a 41-28 margin.
How It Happened
First Half
• To counter Clemson's height advantage, the Tar Heels started a taller lineup to begin the game. Big men Jae'Lyn Withers and Ven-Allen Lubin joined guards Cadeau, Davis and Seth Trimble to start the game.
• The Tigers hit 6 of 9 three-pointers in the first 12+ minutes, maintaining a slim lead for most of the early going despite UNC starting 11 for 21 from the floor (52.4 percent).
• After Lubin hit a layup with 8:33 left in the first half to make the score 27-25 Clemson, the Tigers finished the first half on a 22-8 run to take command.
• Clemson led, 49-33, at halftime, behind 20 first-half points from Lakhin.
Second Half
• The Tigers' defense limited Carolina to 32 second-half points on 40.6 percent shooting after the break (13 for 32).
• UNC was just 4 for 19 from three-point range in the game overall while Clemson was 12 for 25.
