Black History Month Spotlight: Bella Miller
February 6, 2025 | Women's Gymnastics
February marks Black History Month, an important time to remember and recognize the generations who have meant so much to our history while we also continue to have conversations about our present and future. Throughout the month, Carolina Gymnastics will be celebrating its remarkable student-athletes and their contributions to the team, University and community.Â
Bella Miller is a senior from Coral Springs, Florida, who has competed in every floor lineup the past two seasons. A business administration major, she has been named to the All-ACC Academic and WCGA Scholastic All-America teams.
What is your favorite thing about being a Carolina gymnast?Â
My favorite thing about being a Carolina gymnast is the community. Gymnastics is an individual sport in so many ways, but at UNC, we truly compete and grow together. The support from my teammates, coaches and the Carolina family makes this experience so special. Every day, I get to train alongside incredible athletes who push me to be my best while also celebrating who I am as a person.Â
What is something you've accomplished – on or off the mats – that you're really proud of?Â
One of my proudest accomplishments is balancing the demands of being a Division 1 student-athlete at UNC while also leading initiatives that promote diversity and inclusion. As an executive board member of SAFE (Student-Athletes Facilitating Equity), I've been working to create spaces where all athletes, especially those from underrepresented backgrounds, feel seen, heard and supported. It's rewarding to know that my efforts are helping to foster a culture of belonging at Carolina.Â
What does Black History Month mean to you?Â
Black History Month is a time of reflection, celebration, and recognition. It's an opportunity to honor the resilience and excellence of those who came before us while continuing to push for progress. As a Black student-athlete, I see it as a reminder to stand tall in my identity, to uplift others and to carry forward the legacy of those who paved the way for me to be here.Â
How have Black leaders and mentors inspired or shaped you?Â
I've been incredibly fortunate to have strong Black leaders at UNC who inspire me daily. Cricket Lane and Martina Ballen are two women whose leadership and advocacy have made a lasting impact on me. Cricket Lane's commitment to student-athlete development has shown me the power of mentorship and how crucial it is to create opportunities for the next generation. Martina Ballen's presence in athletics demonstrates what it means to break barriers and excel in spaces where we are often underrepresented. Seeing them lead with confidence and grace reminds me that I, too, can achieve greatness while staying true to who I am.Â
What advice would you give to younger Black athletes hoping to compete at a high level?Â
Be who you are and never let anyone dull your shine. People may try to put you in a box or make assumptions about you, but you have the power to prove them wrong. Work hard, trust in your abilities, and don't be afraid to take up space. Your voice, your talent, and your presence matter—on and off the competition floorÂ
