Kovacs’ 15-0 Mark Leads Fencing To 4-1 Team Record At Beguinet Classic

DURHAM, NC - The women's fencing team had a good showing at the Beguinet Classic at Duke on Saturday, Feb. 8.
Carolina came out fast against the number two division three school in the country, NYU, winning 20-7. The Tar Heels jumped out to a 10-1 lead. The two-time All-American, Sophia Kovacs, brought home the victory as she won the 14th bout against the Violets. She produced perfect round. Foil and Epee went 7-2, highlighted by Molly Kettelle and Mia Smotritsky's 3-0 record against NYU.
The Tar Heels dropped a tightly contested match against No. 11 Temple, which was highlighted by Kovac's 3-0 record for the second straight match. Carolina opened up with a 9-4 lead, and Temple battled back, tying it up at 13-13 before taking down UNC.
UNC bounced back after the loss to Temple in a big way against No. 15 MIT, 21-6. Early in the third round. The Tar Heels went on a 10-0 run to build up a 12-2 lead early. Tatiana Zafft was one of five Tar Heels that stayed undefeated against MIT as she scored the final point to clinch the ranked win. Katie McGillion-Moore, Anna Temiryaev, Gabriella Alfarache, and Kovacs also went 3-0 in the final morning match.
Boston College and the Tar Heels went wire to wire throughout the match. The Tar Heels won 14-13, and Temiryaev won the final bout 5-3.
In the night's final match, Carolina opened the match on a 9-1 run against Air Force. The Falcons won three more bouts to bring the match closer, but Carolina closed the door on the match with their second run of the match with an 11-1 spree, winning 22-5.
