CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The future is bright for North Carolina women's basketball as incoming freshman Nyla Brooks has been named the 2025 Gatorade Virginia Girls Basketball Player of the Year.
"Congratulations to our very own Nyla Brooks, on her Gatorade Player of the Year announcement. This honor is a testament to her talent, unwavering dedication, and relentless pursuit of excellence," said head coach Courtney Banghart. "We are beyond proud to have her as part of the Carolina family, and our entire program and community are thrilled to support her on this well-deserved recognition."
The 6-2 guard out of Bishop Ireton High School was instrumental in the Cardinals 27-6 season and in taking home the Virginia Independent School Athletic Association Division I state championship. Racking up numerous accolades, Brooks was named the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference Player of the Year after averaging 18.3 points, 7.6 rebounds, 2.6 assists, 1.5 steals and 1.0 blocks per game. In the state final, she tallied 23 points and 12 rebounds in the 58-51 win over Paul VI Catholic High School.
A McDonald's All-American game participant and a Naismith Award Midseason Team Member, Brooks is touted as the nation's No. 20 recruit in the class of 2025 by ESPN.
Excelling in the classroom, Brooks boasts a 3.81 GPA and has volunteered throughout her high school career with the Lioness project and served as a mentor through the Big Sister Little Sister mentoring program.
Joining her future teammate Lanie Grant, the Tar Heels will boast back-to-back Gatorade Players of the Year from Virginia on the 2025-26 roster.
Brooks is one of three signees from Carolina's highly touted 2025 recruiting class, joining Taliyah Henderson out of Arizona and Taissa Queiroz from Brazil.
