March 23, 2025 | Softball
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Carolina softball clinched the series over Louisville with a big 14-3 win on Sunday afternoon.
Carlie Myrtle and Sanaa Thompson just keep hitting home runs. Myrtle got the party started in the second inning to give UNC a 1-0 lead. She made it 4-0 in the third inning sending a two-run bomb to the opposite field.
Kiannah Pierce followed that up with a homer of her own to almost the exact same spot, marking the first time the Tar Heels have gone back-to-back this season. After two RBI singles, Thompson stepped to the plate with the bases loaded and smacked a grand slam to cap off the nine run third inning.
The duo of Myrtle and Thompson combined for seven homers and 18 RBI this week. Thompson had a homer in each game this weekend.
Louisville was able to get on the board with a three run home run in the fourth making it 11-3. Lexie Roberts made sure to answer immediately, driving in Bryten Burns. Alex Coleman brought Grace Jackson home next. A few batters later Thompson drove in her fifth RBI of the day to make it 14-3.
UNC pitching handled business as well with Britton Rogers going 3.2 innings, just allowing the home run. Nikki Harris locked things down going 1.1 innings of scoreless ball.
The Tar Heels close out an explosive weekend where they racked up 31 runs on 43 hits in the three games. They hit an insane .483 as a team with an on-base percentage of .525. They clubbed eight homers and had eight different players log an RBI. Eight players had at least four hits as well.
Now it's time for Carolina to hit the road. UNC will face UNCG on Wednesday in Greensboro and then head to Syracuse for a weekend series starting on Friday.
