Kalbas Reaches 800 Career Wins
January 17, 2026 | Women's Tennis
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – University of North Carolina women's tennis head coach Brian Kalbas reached 800 career wins Saturday afternoon. He remains the winningest active NCAA tennis coach in the nation and just the third all-time to reach 800 wins. Kalbas is also the winningest coach in ACC women's tennis history.
Kalbas continues to cement his legacy as one of the greatest coaches in the sport. Most recently, Kalbas was named to the North Carolina Tennis Hall of Fame in 2025 as part of its Class of 2026.
At Carolina
In the summer of 2003, Kalbas accepted the head coaching position at UNC and has since turned the program into one of the most successful collegiate tennis programs. Throughout his time at Carolina, Kalbas has compiled a 586-111 record. Kalbas is currently in his 23rd season at the helm after bringing eight ACC Championship titles, seven ITA National Team Indoor Championships, three NCAA Doubles national championships, two NCAA Singles national championships and one NCAA Team national championship to the university.
Under the guidance of Kalbas, the Tar Heels have recorded seven 30-win seasons, appeared in the NCAA Tournament each year during his career, competed in 14 NCAA quarterfinals and advanced to seven Final Fours. Most notably, the team's 2023 NCAA championship was the first in program history.
Over the past 22 seasons in Chapel Hill, Kalbas has continued to develop the top players in collegiate tennis as UNC players have received a total of 83 All-America honors. Kalbas has also coached two ITA National Players of the Year, an ITA Rookie of the Year and an ITA Most Improved Senior of the Year.
Building a premiere program has come with a multitude of honors for Kalbas. He has been named National Coach of the Year three times and is a nine-time ITA Regional Coach of the Year and six-time ACC Coach of the Year.
Beyond the court, Kalbas has never had a scholarship player transfer from Carolina, and every student-athlete that has completed four years has left the university with a degree.
Prior to Carolina
Before coming to Carolina, Kalbas previously spent 11 years as head coach of the William & Mary women's tennis program. Kalbas posted a 214-85 overall record while at William & Mary. During his time in Williamsburg, Va., Kalbas led the team to nine CAA Championships while coaching 24 players to 56 total All-America honors. Kalbas' coaching accolades began to quickly grow while guiding the Tribe. Kalbas was a four-time CAA Coach and ITA Regional Coach of the Year honoree and was tabbed ITA National Coach of the Year in 1998.
