Shamel Named ACC Men's Fencer Of The Week

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Freshman Youssef Shamel earned his first career fencing accolade of the season when the Atlantic Coast Conference named him ACC Men's Fencer Of The Week on Wednesday, Feb. 11.
Shamel's performance last weekend helped Carolina close out the regular season with a dominant team 5-0 record at the Beguinet Classic on Saturday, Feb 7. Fencing took down three ranked opponents: No. 9 Penn State, No. 11 Boston College, and No. 13 NYU.
The freshman went 12-1 on the weekend, highlighted by his 5-2 victory over Daniel Gao 5-2 from No. 11 Boston College, who finished 7th at the Junior Epee World Cup. Shamel also took down Tingwei Xu, an All-American, and Zach Suico, an All-Region honoree from No. 9 Penn State.
