Hagen Zheng joined the UNC fencing team in 2021 and spent his first year competing on the men’s epee squad. In the fall of 2022, Zheng made the transition to his current role as a student coach.
Zheng began fencing in 2009 after his father watched the sport in the Beijing Summer Olympics and convinced him to try by comparing it to Star Wars. He started competing five years later, in 2014. Since then he has represented the U.S. at multiple World Cup events.
Hagen is the son of Brian Zheng and Karen Chan. His favorite pastimes are watching and analyzing sports, playing fighting and strategy games, cooking and eating, listening to music, and reading . His favorite sport other than fencing is basketball and the athlete he admires most is Kevin Garnett.
