Joe has moved to the defensive midfield position in fall practice.
Joe is a very good athlete. He's a strong, physical player and runs very well.
We think he can help us in the transition game and once he gets a knack for the defense will help us in that aspect of the game.
General: A 6-0, 190-pound midfielder.
Prep: Graduated from New Canaan High School where he played for coach Alex Whitten...finished his career with 68 goals, 89 assists and 100 ground balls (23g, 38s, 40gbs as senior; 27g, 31a, 35 gbs as a junior; 18g, 20a, 25gbs as sophomore)...a two-time All-America selection...was named two-time All-State and three-time All-County...captain of lacrosse team as senior...led New Canaan to a 2010 state semifinalist spot and the 2008 state runner-up position...was tapped for the 2010 New England Under Armour All-Star Team...was named an ESPN Rise honorable mention selection in 2010...an honor roll student...the captain of a New Canaan football team as a senior...led gridiron squad to two state titles...at New Canaan, he played running back and strong safety on the football team for four years, midfielder on the lacrosse team for four years and was a 200-meter and 400-meter runner on the track squad for three years...named All-State in football and was All-County selection twice...on track team was two-time All-County selection as well as being named All-State once...competed in nationals on a 4x200 relay squad...president of service league for boys, a group of high school boys completing over 3,000 hours of community service...recipient of principal's leadership award and finance scholarship award.
Personal: Joseph Walter Costigan is the son of Craig and Laura Costigan...business administration major...was born December 20, 1991 in Ridgewood, N.J. ...has two brothers and one sister...his mother swam in college at Northeastern University.

Section #1 (Lacrosse Related)
1. The best thing about being a Tar Heel lacrosse player is the great teammates you get to meet and new opportunities that can be taken advantage of.
2. My favorite thing about competing for Coach Breschi is that it is easy to compete for someone who is so passionate about lacrosse and cares about every single one of us.
3. Since last year the aspects of my training I've worked on the most are my physical fitness in the weight room and my shooting.
4. My best friend on another college lacrosse team is Cody Newton (Lehigh).
5. My greatest strengths as a lacrosse player are my hustle on the field and vision.
Section #2 (Joe's Interests)
1. Away from the lacrosse field and academic pursuits I like to spend time with my friends and family.
2. The best movie I've seen recently is The Dark Knight.
3. If I could compete in another sport at UNC it would be basketball.
4. The music act I'd most like to see in person is Big Sean.
5. The personal interest I have that might surprise my teammates is I like to bake.

1. After a game at Fetzer Field, I'd like to see a tailgate spread that included cheeseburgers, hot dogs and nachos.
2. My favorite beverage is Yoo-hoo.
3. My favorite food made by a relative is tacos.
