CAREER NOTES
Fifth-year senior has played in 110 games at Carolina • Was team captain in 2007-08 when the Tar Heels won the ACC championship and played in the Final Four in San Antonio • Missed all but three games in 2008-09 because of injury and received a medical hardship waiver from the ACC to play a fifth season • Started 55 games • Missed only one game in his first three seasons (was sick at Arizona in 2006-07) • Has played in 91 wins as a Tar Heel • Carolina's 2006-07 and 2007-08 defensive player of the year • Voted to the media and coaches' ACC all-defensive teams in 2007-08 • Earned ACC All-Tournament Team honors in 2008 after leading UNC to its record 17th title • Carolina's defensive player of the game 20 times (once as a freshman at Duke, eight times as a sophomore and a team-leading 11 times in 2007-08) • Scored in double figures 17 times with a high of 17 points against UC Santa Barbara on Dec. 22, 2007 • Scored his 600th career point in the 2008 ACC Tournament final • Has played four different positions at Carolina • Serves as president of UNC's Student-Athlete Advisory Council.
REDSHIRT SEASON (2008-09)
Underwent surgery on Oct. 8, 2008, to repair a stress fracture in his left fifth metatarsal • Missed the first 11 games, then returned to action with an 11-minute stint against Rutgers on Dec. 28 • Had three points, four rebounds (three offensive), two assists and two steals in his return against the Scarlet Knights • Did not score a field goal in the next two games at Nevada and against Boston College, the first time that happened since his sophomore season (four points in three games were his fewest in any three-game span at UNC) • Did not attempt a field goal against Boston College, for only the second time • Did not play again after the BC game on Jan. 4th, 2009 •Announced on Feb. 3 that he would miss the rest of the season • Won the team's most inspirational player award in a post-season vote by his teammates and coaches.
JUNIOR SEASON (2007-08)
Voted a co-captain with senior Quentin Thomas • Carolina's defensive player of the year for the second straight year • One of the premier defensive players in college basketball • Leading vote-getter on the ACC coaches' all-defensive team • One of only two players (with Duke's DeMarcus Nelson) to get votes from more than half the league's head coaches • Also selected to the media's all-defensive team • Joins Brendan Haywood and Jackie Manuel as Tar Heels selected to the media's all-defensive team in the last seven years and Haywood, Manuel, David Noel and Vince Carter to the coaches' teams in the last 13 years • Earned Carolina's defensive player of the game award a team-leading 11 times, including the NCAA East Regional title game vs. Louisville • Scored in double figures nine times, seven in ACC play • Scored in double figures in consecutive games against Nicholls and UC Santa Barbara and all three games in the ACC Tourney • Made 12 of 25 from three-point range after starting the year 0 for 5 in the first 18 games • Started all 39 games at small forward, but has played at four positions • Averaged a career-high 6.9 points and 4.5 rebounds per game • Had 75 offensive rebounds (1.9 per game), the second most on the team • Made 29 of his last 42 (.708) free throws • Had 36 assists in the last 12 games.

Pre-ACC: Played exceptional defense in the second half of the win at Davidson, holding Stephen Curry to 2 of 12 shooting from three-point range • Five points, seven rebounds, three assists and three steals and was UNC's defensive player of the game in win over South Carolina State • Had nine points and eight rebounds, five of them on the offensive glass, and was Carolina's defensive player of the game at Ohio State • Helped hold the Buckeyes to 27.1 percent shooting from the floor • Ohio State went 10:52 in the second half without a field goal • Scored 12 points on 5 of 7 shooting from the floor, had four offensive rebounds and was UNC's defensive player of the game against Nicholls • Added four assists and two steals • Scored a career-high 17 points and added five rebounds, two assists and outstanding defense against UC Santa Barbara • Held UCSB leading scorer Alex Harris to six points below his average • Made a career-high eight field goals • Defensive player of the game against Kent.
January: Career-high 10 rebounds plus six points, four assists and two steals and was UNC's defensive player of the game in a career-high 36 minutes at Clemson • Carolina's defensive player of the game and had a career-high five assists in home win against NC State • Had eight points, all on dunks, four rebounds and two steals at Georgia Tech • Earned defensive player of the game honors for the fifth game in a row, only the second Tar Heel to accomplish that in the Roy Williams Era (with Jackie Manuel in 2004-05) • Hit his first two three-pointers of the season and finished with nine points in the loss to Maryland • Scored nine points and was the defensive player of the game at Miami.
February: Scored 10 points against Boston College, the first time in 2007-08 he scored in double figures in an ACC game • Made one three-pointer, the first time in his career he made one in three straight games • Played 31 minutes of exceptional defense despite playing with a painful turf toe on his left foot • Helped limit the Noles to 40 percent shooting from the floor • Scored 16 points, the most he has scored in an ACC game as a Tar Heel, and added five boards and three assists in home loss against Duke • Went 8 for 8 from the free throw line (career-high attempts) and hit two three-pointers • Third time in his career against Duke that he scored in double figures • Sprained his right ankle in the double overtime win vs. Clemson • Attempted one shot from the floor, a three-pointer he made • Came out of the game with 4:04 to play in regulation and did not return • Played 35 minutes, 20 of which he played at the point, in the win at Virginia • Had seven points, six rebounds and three assists • Hit a three-pointer to give UNC a 63-59 lead with 6:38 to play • Outstanding all-around effort at NC State as he scored 13 points and added six rebounds and two steals • Was 6 for 9 from the floor after making just eight field goals in the previous five games • Six field goals were an ACC career high • Had career highs in both assists (six) and turnovers (six) against Wake Forest.
ACC Tournament: Named first-team all-tournament with Tyler Hansbrough, Wayne Ellington and Clemson's KC Rivers and Trevor Booker • Scored in double figures in all three wins over Florida State, Virginia Tech and Clemson games, the first time this year he did that in two or more consecutive games against ACC teams (first time since his freshman year) • Had 10 points, six rebounds and four assists against Florida State, 10 points, five boards, four assists and two steals vs. Virginia Tech and 10 points, nine rebounds and two steals against Clemson in the championship game • Made 13 for 24 from the floor, 54.2 percent, well above his season average • Led the Tar Heels in assists in the first two games.
NCAA Tournament: Had six points, seven rebounds, two assists and two steals and was UNC's defensive player of the game in regional final vs. Louisville • Had four assists against Washington State • Tied his career high with six assists and played exceptional defense against Razorback forward Sonny Weems (8 for 20 from the floor) in second round win over Arkansas • Went scoreless in 32 minutes vs. Kansas in Final Four.
SOPHOMORE SEASON (2006-07)
Season Notes: Carolina's defensive player of the year as selected by the coaches • Second on the team with eight defensive player of the game honors (Sacred Heart, Gonzaga, Ohio State, UNC Asheville, Virginia, at NC State, at Georgia Tech, Eastern Kentucky) • Won the defensive award one time as a freshman (Carolina's win at No. 1-ranked Duke) • Third on the team with 54 offensive rebounds and 39 steals • Scored in double figures three times (13 vs. Duke, 10 vs. High Point and 10 vs. USC).
Game Highlights
November: Played sensational defense in the second half of Carolina's NIT win over Winthrop • Held Winthrop's leading scorer (Torrell Martin) to one second-half three-pointer after Martin hit six in the first half • Had eight points and career-high eight rebounds in the win over Ohio State • Had five offensive rebounds against the Buckeyes.
December: Scored 10 points (5 for 6 from the floor) against High Point • That was his first time in double figures since he had 12 in the win at No. 1-ranked Duke on March 4, 2006 • Had three assists and no turnovers vs. Florida Atlantic and four assists without a turnover at Saint Louis • Hit his first three-point field goal of the year at Saint Louis.
January: Scored seven points and had three rebounds, two assists and no turnovers against Florida State • Scored four points, had six rebounds (four on the offensive glass) and was defensive player of the game vs. Virginia • Helped UNC grab a season-high 21 offensive boards and score 21 second-chance points • Had a key offensive rebound and put-back basket to give UNC a 57-52 lead midway through the second half • Did not play at Arizona due to a stomach illness • Scored five points and had five rebounds and two assists in win over Miami.
February: Carolina's defensive player of the game at NC State when the Tar Heels forced 22 turnovers that led to 30 points • Scored four points with two assists, two steals and no turnovers in 20 minutes • Played significant role on both ends of the court in win at Duke • Tar Heels were plus 11 in scoring with him on the floor, including plus 10 in the second half • Had five points, three assists, no turnovers and two offensive rebounds and played solid defense at the two-guard and small forward positions • Played 13 minutes in the second half • Grabbed three more offensive rebounds and had five points, three assists, a block and steal in 104-67 win over Wake Forest • Made both ends of a 1- and-1 with 22.1 seconds to play to give Carolina a 75-72 lead in its win at Boston College • Were his only two points of the game • Free throws were his 300th career points • First-half three-pointer in win over NC State was his second three-pointer of the season and first since Saint Louis on Dec. 21.
March: Scored a season-high 13 points and added three rebounds, two assists and a steal in 86-72 win over Duke • Only second time in double figure points this year • Scored 11 second-half points, which is more than he scored in any previous game all year • Three-pointer with 11:24 to play may have been the key shot in the game • Only his third three of the year • Gave UNC a 56-50 lead moments after Duke had pulled within two at 50-48.
2007 ACC Tournament:Averaged 14.3 minutes per game in the three wins • Six of his nine rebounds were on the offensive glass • Had four rebounds against Florida State and Boston College • Had three offensive boards and two assists vs. BC.
NCAA Tournament: Matched his career assist high with four and was Carolina's defensive player of the game against Eastern Kentucky • Had two steals in each game • Played 17 minutes of solid defense against Michigan State • Helped limit Spartan star Drew Neitzel to 4 of 13 shooting in the second half • Made his first start of the year (first since Jan. 19, 2006) and helped UNC come from 16 points down to beat USC • Had 10 points and a career- high nine rebounds (four offensive) • Scored nine second-half points • Scored seven points on three offensive rebounds in a span of 3:28 midway through the second half that helped bring UNC from 10 points down (49-59) to within one point at 58-59 • First time in double figures since he had 13 vs. Duke on March 4 • Made second start of the season vs. Georgetown • Had three rebounds and two assists • Only two points came from the free throw line.
FRESHMAN SEASON (2005-06)
Season Notes: Scored in double figures six times, including each of the last three regular-season ACC games • Shot 22 for 44 (.500) from the floor in the last nine games • Started the first 14 games at the two-guard slot • Had a season-high 14 points against Illinois and UNC Asheville • Had a season-high four steals against Gardner-Webb, Illinois and Davidson • Averaged 9.8 points in a five-game stretch in February that included wins over Wake Forest, NC State, Maryland, Virginia and Duke • Had surgery in September to repair a torn ligament in his left wrist, then battled a series of illnesses in January.

December: Scored eight points, all in the second half in the win at No. 10 Kentucky, and sank a pair of free throws with 19 seconds left • Had 14 points, five rebounds, three assists and three steals vs. UNC Asheville and went 6 for 6 from the line.
January: Made two three-pointers at Virginia, the first time he hit multiple three-pointers in a game • Came off the bench for the first time and hit a key three-pointer in the second-half comeback win at Florida State • Had five points, four rebounds and two assists in 18 minutes • Three-pointer from the corner gave the Tar Heels a 64-59 lead.
February: Had six points, two offensive rebounds and a key steal on Feb. 7 vs. Duke • Had six points and five rebounds (his ACC high) in win at Wake Forest • Had a key steal and lay-up in the decisive 8-0 run • Scored nine points in the win at NC State • Was 4 for 7 from the field and hit a three-pointer that cut into State's 18-14 lead (the Pack's largest lead of the night) • Scored three times in a span of 1:30 midway through the second half to increase UNC's lead to 18 • Scored in double figures for the first time in ACC play in the Feb. 26 win over Maryland • Had 12 points, two offensive rebounds, two assists and two steals.
March: Had 10 points, five rebounds and two assists in win over Virginia • Marked the first time as a Tar Heel he scored in double figures in consecutive games • Carolina's defensive player of the game after limiting J.J. Redick to one field goal in his last 16 attempts from the floor in UNC's 83- 76 win at No. 1 Duke • Matched his ACC scoring high with 12 points • Added four rebounds, two assists and a steal in 23 minutes, his most extensive playing time in 19 games (since Southern California) • Matched his season-high with three assists in NCAA first round win over Murray State • Clinched that 69-65 NCAA Tournament win by making both ends of a 1-and-1 with 16.5 seconds to play.

Ginyard was the Virginia Independent Schools Player of the Year, Gatorade Player of the Year and Mr. Basketball in Virginia • Attended Bishop O'Connell High School in Arlington, Va., and was coached by Joseph Wootten • First-team all-metro by the Washington Post and first-team All-Northern Virginia • Four-year starter, team went 116-19 in his four seasons • Career statistics include 1,615 points (14.2 per game), 520 rebounds (4.6 per game), 298 steals and 289 assists • Finished 31-3 as a senior winning the Virginia Independent Schools Division I state championship and the Catholic Invitational • As a senior he averaged 20.4 points, 4.9 rebounds, 3.0 steals and 2.7 assists • Shot 56 percent from the floor (34 percent from three-point range) • Scored a season-high 31 points on two occasions • MVP of Alhambra Invitational • Virginia Independent Schools Division I state champions in 2002, 2003 and 2005 • As a junior he averaged 13.2 points, 5.5 rebounds, 2.5 steals and 2.6 assists • Named MVP of the 2004 GlaxoSmithKline Holiday Invitational in Raleigh • Had 27 points and nine rebounds in leading Bishop O'Connell to win in finals • National Honor Society member and National Merit Scholar • Born Marcus Darrel Ginyard on May 8, 1987 • Son of Ronald Sr. and Annise Ginyard • Double-majoring in communication studies and sociology.
