Swimmers Take Early Leads In Double-Dual Meet

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- After the first day of a double-dual meet competition at the University of Minnesota, North Carolina?s men and women took some early leads over their competition.
The 18th ranked Tar Heel women were led by strong performances on the first day of competition. Junior Summer Mack finished first in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 55.81. Ilana Kavadlo and Kelly McLaughlin finished first and second respectively in the 200-yard butterfly with times of 2:03.05 and 2:03.62. McLaughlin also gave a strong performance in the 200-yard individual medley coming in third, behind Tar Heel teammate Katie Hathaway who finished second with a time of 2:03.94. The Tar Heel women also took first in the 800-yard freestyle relay and second in the 200-yard freestyle relay.
The 22nd ranked Tar Heel men were led by sophomore Chris Helin who finished the day with a first place finish in the 200-yard individual medley and the 100-yard breaststroke. Stephen Mohr and Judd Glasco also contributed with strong performances in the 1000-yard freestyle finishing the race second and third respectively.
The other teams involved in the competition are Nebraska, Minnesota and Michigan. The Minnesota men are ranked 11th nationally and the women 16th. Nebraska?s men are ranked 14th while the women are ranked 12th. And Michigan?s women swimmers are ranked 7th nationally.
