CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The season is over for the North Carolina women's basketball team, but Tar Heel players will be competing at both the men's and the women's Final Four sites this week.
Senior guard Jessica Gaspar will compete in College Slam Dunk and Three-Point Shooting Championships at the Ice Palace in Tampa, Fla., on Thursday, March 25. The event, which is being staged by Intersport in conjunction with the men's Final Four, will air live on ESPN. Among the other players scheduled to compete in the Women's National Three-Point Championship are Colorado State's Becky Hammon and Clemson's Amy Geren.
Senior guard/forward Chanel Wright will play in the WBCA All-Star Challenge, to be held in San Jose, Calif., on Saturday, March 27, in conjunction with the women's Final Four. Wright is one of 17 Division I players, chosen from a pool of 96 nominees, who will compete in the game at the San Jose State Events Center. Also included are the Player of the Year winners from Division II, Division III and the NAIA.
The Tar Heels finished the 1998-99 season 28-8 after losing 82-59 to Purdue last Saturday in a Midwest Regional semifinal in Normal, Ill. Gaspar and Wright are among five Tar Heel seniors who finished their Carolina careers with that game.
