WBB Earns 20th Win, Topples Wake Forest On The Road
February 8, 2026 | Women's Basketball
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The train keeps rolling, as No. 25 North Carolina women's basketball picked up its 20th win of the season and seventh straight in an 84-56 victory over Wake Forest from LJVM Coliseum on Sunday afternoon. The Tar Heels have now rattled off 20 wins in each of the last five seasons.
In North Carolina's (20-5, 9-3 ACC) largest win over Wake Forest (13-12, 3-10 ACC) in the Courtney Banghart era, the Tar Heels picked up their fifth consecutive win over the Demon Deacons in the 28-point triumph.
There was no slowing down Nyla Brooks as the freshman came rearing to go, knocking down five total triples en route to a career-high 21 points. All over the defensive glass, Brooks also grabbed a career-best seven boards. Brooks is the third Tar Heel to piece together a 20-point outing this season.Â
The combination of Nyla's proved to be dangerous as Nyla Harris tacked on 19 points on an efficient shooting day of 7-of-9 from the field. Harris also grabbed five of Carolina's 41 total team rebounds and grabbed two steals.
Indya Nivar loves to share the ball, as the senior tied her career-high for the second straight game with seven assists. This season, Nivar has dished out five or more helpers in nine games as the senior ultimately stuffed the stat sheet with nine points and eight rebounds.Â
Taking advantage of second chances, the Tar Heels converted a season-best 21 second-chance points against the Demon Deacons off of 15 offensive rebounds.
Committing multiple turnovers in the opening moments of the game, Carolina found itself facing an early deficit with ground to make up in the opening quarter. As the Tar Heels began to get comfortable from the floor, a 16-0 run allowed UNC to grab its first lead of the day midway through the first. Holding the Demon Deacons without a point for over four minutes in the first to lead 22-11.
As Brooks hit a rhythm from beyond the arc, the Tar Heels also took advantage on the offensive glass with second-chance buckets to extend their advantage. The Demon Deacons took advantage in the paint to cut the Carolina lead to single-digits near the break, yet Brooks remained hot to maintain control and lead by 10 at the break.
Harris remained efficient on the inside, hitting double-figure scoring for the fourth straight game early on in the third. Sharing the ball at a high rate, the Tar Heels ran ahead by as many as 20 in the frame due to the efforts of Harris and Nivar. With the three-ball flying, Carolina ran ahead to a 23-point lead with 10 minutes remaining.
As the Tar heels went deep into the bench, the defense held Wake Forest to multi-minute scoring droughts to close the door and walk out of LVJM Coliseum with the 84-56 win for its seventh straight.
Carolina returns to action on Thursday night from Carmichael Arena, hosting SMU in the second meeting between the two programs. The 6 p.m. ET tip against the Mustangs is slated to air on ACC Network.
