Women's Hoops Falls to Rival N.C. State

RALEIGH, N.C. - Summer Erb scored 24 points, and Tynesha Lewis added 21 as North Carolina State upset No. 6 North Carolina 87-70 Thursday night, handing the Tar Heels their first Atlantic Coast Conference defeat.
The Wolfpack (8-5, 2-2) beat North Carolina (17-2, 4-1) for the fifth-straight time in Reynolds Coliseum.
LySchale Jones added 14 points, and Kristen Gillespie had 13 for N.C. State.
Erb scored five points in a 38-second span, including two free throws off an intentional foul by Juana Brown, to key a 10-0 run that iced the game in the final minutes. Lewis capped the run with two more free throws for a 77-59 Wolfpack lead with 3:07 left to play.
N.C. State made eight of 12 free throws in the final 1:20 to hold North Carolina at bay.
The Wolfpack came out after a 31-31 tie at halftime and made nine of their first 15 shots to break open what had been a see-saw game in the first half.
Lewis scored just four points in the first half, but went 5-for-5 from the floor in the first 6:58 of the second to give N.C. State a 51-43 lead. Jones' jumper in the lane pushed the margin to 53-43 with 11:50 remaining.
Chanel Wright and Jackie Higgins had 14 points apiece to lead North Carolina, while Nikki Teasley chipped in 13 and Brown had 12.
