Heels Play Pack At Reynolds Coliseum For The Last Time Tonight
June 21, 1999 | Men's Basketball
January 16, 1999
The North Carolina Tar Heels (14-4, 2-2 ACC) travel to Reynolds Coliseum for the last time tonight as the N.C. State Wolfpack (11-5, 2-3 ACC) hosts UNC in a 9:30 p.m. (ESPN) contest.
State will be moving to the new Entertainment and Sports Arena next season.
The two teams first met at Reynolds on February 21, 1950, when the legendary Everett Case's squad trounced Carolina 70-44. UNC's first win at Reynolds was a 70-69 thriller played the night of Jan. 24, 1953. That game was one of Frank McGuire's biggest wins since he had come to Carolina in 1952.
Perhaps the most memorable Tar Heel win at Reynolds was a 70-69 victory on January 17, 1979. Carolina had a huge 40-19 lead at the half and appeared poised to blow out the Pack. But N.C. State put on a furious second-half rally to take a 69-68 lead with less than a minute to play. Dudley radley missed a jumper on the Heels' ensuing possession and State got the ball back, but not for long. Bradley stole the ball from Clyde Austin at mid-court and got an uncontested two-handed dunk with three seconds left. State's desperation shot missed at the buzzer, and the incredible emotional roller-coaster ended with the Heels on top.
The Wolfpack holds a slim 29-28 edge over the Heels in games played at Reynolds. UNC has won its last two games there, including an exciting 45-44 win in January, 1997. Carolina came from behind to win on a short Ed Cota jumper in the final seconds.
