COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Top-ranked and four-time defending NCAA champion Maryland scored seven of the first eight goals of the second half Sunday afternoon to break open a close game with second-ranked North Carolina as the Terrapins went on to post a 13-7 victory before 510 fans at Ludwig Field.
Maryland improved to 3-0 with the victory and 2-0 in the Atlantic Coast Conference while the Tar Heels fell to 1-2 on the campaign and 0-1 in the ACC heading into a tough matchup with fifth-ranked Loyola next Friday at 4 p.m. in Baltimore, Md. Carolina also plays at Johns Hopkins next Sunday at 12 noon. Tar Heel head coach Jenny Slingluff Levy's team stayed with the Terps during the first half, trailing only 5-3 at intermission but Maryland outscored North Carolina 7-1 in the first 19:03 of the second half to assume a 12-4 lead that was never challenged.
Carolina was led by a pair of junior midfielders as Gray MacNair tallied three goals and Meghann Mohler twice. The Terps were led by junior midfielder Kristin Sommar who had four goals and by sophomore attackwoman Jen Adams who had three goals. Sophomore Allison Comito had two goals and two assists for Maryland and Quinn Carney had two goals and one assist. It was Carney's goal with 8:30 left in the first half that gave the Terps the lead for good at 4-3. That sparked a run of five straight goals that put the Terps up 8-3. MacNair's goal with 19:21 left in the game got the Heels back within 8-4, but the Terps then ran off four more goals in succession.
Carolina outscored the Terrapins 3-1 in the game's final 6:21 but it was too little too late. The win by the Terps improved their all-time record against Carolina to 4-2.
Maryland goalkeeper Alex Kahoe was outstanding as she made 14 saves while allowing only seven goals. The Terrapins outshot the Tar Heels 31-25 and won 13 draw controls to only six for UNC. The Terrapins played a very physical game, being called for 28 fouls vis-*-vis only seven for the Tar Heels. But UNC was able to score on only two of 13 free position shots and was unable to capitalize on the Terrapins' foul woes.
