Women's Basketball Standouts Earn Awards

CHAPEL HILL, N.C- The University of North Carolina women's basketball program honored its five seniors and presented several special awards at its annual team banquet Tuesday evening.
Sophomore guard Nikki Teasley, who led the team in scoring (15.4 ppg) and led the ACC in both assists (211/5.9) and steals (95/2.6), was honored as the team's Best All-Around Player. Senior guard/forward Chanel Wright was named the team's Best Defensive Player and sophomore forward LaQuanda Barksdale was honored as the team's Best Offensive Player. Most Improved awards went to freshman LaShonda Allen and sophomore Jackie Higgins. Senior Laquanda Dawkins was honored with the Coaches' Award and senior Yanick Clay earned the Hustle Award. Senior Jessica Gaspar was recognized as a recipient of the Athletic Director's Award for academics and athletics.
The team's five seniors, all of whom played four years for the Tar Heels, are Yanick Clay, Natasha Davis, Laquanda Dawkins, Jessica Gaspar and Chanel Wright.
The Tar Heels finished the 1998-99 season 28-8, reaching the Sweet Sixteen for the sixth time in the past seven years before falling to eventual NCAA Champion Purdue.
