CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Tracey Williams, whose diverse background includes work in college, professional and international basketball, has joined the University of North Carolina women's basketball staff as an assistant coach. Williams will be involved in all areas of the Tar Heel program but will focus her efforts on recruiting.
"We're thrilled to have Tracey join the staff," UNC head coach Sylvia Hatchell says. "I've worked with her for a number of years through USA Basketball and have found her to be a hard worker with tremendous people skills. She's a great addition to the Carolina program."
In 1997-98, Williams was Vice President for Player Personnel and Basketball Operations for the ABL, the women's professional league. Prior to joining the ABL, she served for four years as the Assistant Director of Women's Programs for USA Basketball. In 1992-93, she was an assistant basketball and volleyball coach at Albany (Ga.) State University. A four-year letterwinner in basketball and softball at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke, she earned a B.S. degree in Health and Physical Education & Recreation Management and Administration in 1986. She is the daughter of Brenda and Sherman Williams of Salemburg, N.C.
"I'm extremely excited about working with Coach Hatchell and the rest of the staff," Williams says. "Carolina has always been an elite program and I'm honored to be here."
SHANNON SPENCER BECOMES DIRECTOR OF BASKETBALL OPERATIONS
Shannon Spencer, a member of the UNC staff since 1996, is Carolina's new Director of Basketball Operations. Spencer, a native of Newton, N.C., who played basketball for Appalachian State, served as an administrative assistant from 1996-98 and an assistant coach in 1998-99. "Shannon is a very dedicated worker and an asset to our staff," Carolina coach Sylvia Hatchell says. "She's done a little bit of everything for us in the last three years and I know she'll do a great job in this position."
The Director of Basketball Operations position was created before the 1998-99 season and was filled last year by Emily Johnson Murphy, who played for Carolina from 1989-92 and had been a member of the staff since 1992. Murphy has chosen to leave UNC to work in the private sector.
