New York - The Baltimore Orioles finally got a win, and they did it in grand fashion.
B.J. Surhoff hit a tiebreaking grand slam in the seventh inning and had five RBIs as Baltimore stopped a 10-game losing streak, rallying past the New York Yankees, 7-3, yesterday at Yankee Stadium.
Juan Guzman (4-6) allowed a pair of first-inning runs and Chili Davis's upper-deck solo homer in the second, then gave up just four more hits before leaving in the seventh. Scott Kamieniecki pitched two-hit relief for his second save.
After consecutive doubles by Chuck Knoblauch and Derek Jeter opened the first, the Yankees were 0 for 7 with runners in scoring position, striking out four times.
Roger Clemens couldn't protect a 3-0 lead on a hot and humid afternoon, and New York lost for just the second time in 12 games.
A day after the Orioles blew a 5-3 lead in the ninth, Surhoff began the comeback with an RBI ground out in the third.
Clemens, battling his control for most of the afternoon, retired nine straight entering the seventh, but gave up a leadoff double to Jeff Conine and an RBI single to Cal Ripken.
One out later, Ramiro Mendoza (3-5) relieved and Mike Figga doubled over the head of center fielder Bernie Williams on his first pitch.
Brady Anderson was intentionally walked, Mike Bordick tied the score with a single, and Surhoff followed with his fifth career slam, his first since June 6, 1996, against Detroit.
