CHAPEL Hill, N.C. - Besides its games in the always-competitive Atlantic Coast Conference, the North Carolina women's basketball team will face non-conference rivals including Notre Dame and Iowa State during the 1999-2000 season. In addition to 14 games at Carmichael Auditorium, the schedule will take the Tar Heels to Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Maryland, South Carolina, Texas and Virginia.
Pairings for the Four in the Fall have yet to be determined, but all four teams in the Nov. 20 event - LSU, Texas Tech, UCLA and UNC - reached the Sweet 16 last season. The Tar Heels face Notre Dame, which reached the NCAA second round last season, in the opening game of the Wachovia Women's Invitational Tournament in Richmond, Va. As part of the ACC/Big 12 Challenge, UNC faces Iowa State, which reached the Elite Eight in the Mideast Regional last season. Additionally, Carolina will host Pac-10 schools Arizona State and California and play Big Ten member Michigan State in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
"It's a very challenging schedule," said UNC coach Sylvia Hatchell, who is heading into her 14th season in Chapel Hill. "Besides a tough conference lineup, we've got some high-profile non-conference games. Although some of our players are in their third seasons as starters, with no seniors on the roster we're still a relatively young team. We're going to be tested by this schedule."
The Tar Heels return three starters from last year's team, which finished 28-8 and reached the Sweet 16. Juniors LaQuanda Barksdale, Juana Brown and Nikki Teasley anchor the 1999-2000 roster, which includes no fourth-year players. UNC will welcome five newcomers to the court in freshmen Coretta Brown (Statesboro, Ga.), Courtney Chambers (Asheville, N.C.), Cherie Lea (Blanch, N.C.) and Jennifer Thomas (Lathrup Village, Mich.) and junior transfer Jasmyn Huntington (University of Nevada).
