CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The University of North Carolina played host to the ACC Media Tour Friday afternoon at the Kenan Football Center. Print and electronic journalists from around the conference were on hand to speak with the Carolina coaching staff as well as a small group of players.
The following are some comments from today's luncheon from sophomores Billy-Dee Greenwood (safety) and Ronald Curry (quarterback).
On the cornerbacks:
"The coaching staff is doing a great job getting those young cornerbacks ready to play and we don't have much depth but we do have some experience in Anthony Anderson and Errol Hood from their spring practices. Those two guys are our starters and are very talented players at the cornerback position."
On the freshmen:
"Right now Kevin Knight and Dexter Reid are two young guys who have the chance to come in on nickel situations, as well as Jason Horton. He's a non-scholarship guy who made tremendous strides in the spring.
"The one thing that you can't coach is effort, and those guys show a lot of effort every day. They work real hard and once they get the technical aspects down then they're going to produce."
On Ronald Curry:
"Ronald Curry is very relaxed back there. He's our leader and I think he's been very accurate with his short-range passes. I'm glad he's on my team, because he makes me a better player.
"When he gets out on the field he produces. He's one of the guys who stepped in right away last year and was able to see that challenge and play well. Off the field he's a quiet, laid back guy, but when it's time to strap it on, he's our leader on the field. He gets the guys excited and ready to play ball."
On this year's offense:
"Alge (Crumpler) and Jason (Peace) being back is going to make a huge difference. We missed those guys last year and I'm looking forward to getting to play with them.
"Alge brings the total package at tight end. Him being back has helped a lot of the other guys improve too, like Dauntae' Finger. Alge's such a big target ? he's got soft hands, and he also likes to block. Some tight ends don't like to block, but Alge really gets out there and does his job and makes a big difference to our team."
On what he has learned since a year ago:
"I think I'm a better football player. I think I'm a better quarterback. When I make mistakes, I know the mistakes I made better and I understand what I did wrong. I think I read defenses a whole lot better and I know where everyone's supposed to be."
On the Virginia game:
"I'm going to stick to the game plan. I just want to win this game and to keep on winning. I want this for the team and for the fans. This is a very family-oriented team, and I just want this for the whole team."
Carolina will hold its second team scrimmage (closed to the public) Saturday at noon at Kenan Stadium. Tar Heel supporters are encouraged to join the Carolina football team Sunday at 2:30 at Kenan for autographs and pictures at Fan Appreciation Day.
