WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Just five days after losing its first home game in four seasons, the fourth-ranked University of North Carolina women's soccer team was on top of its game Friday evening defeating Florida State 9-0 at Spry Soccer Stadium on the Wake Forest University campus. The game was moved to Winston-Salem after Hurricane Floyd inundated the Triangle area earlier this week. The host Demon Deacons are playing #12 Clemson in the second game at Winston-Salem Friday night.
UNC, now 5-1 overall and 1-0 in the Atlantic Coast Conference, outshot the Seminoles 34-3 and released a potent attack that featured two goals by sophomore midfielder Jena Kluegel and single goals by seven other Tar Heels, including two reserves. The Tar Heels played their second successive game without the services of 1999 Women's World Cup Team midfielder Lorrie Fair who is out indefinitely with back spasms.
Friday's game marked only the 14th time in school history that Carolina has had to play another game in the same season after a loss in the previous contest. Apparently the pain of last Sunday's 3-2 loss to #6 Penn State at Fetzer Field stayed with the Tar Heels all week. UNC made quick work of the Seminoles, scoring four goals in the first 15:47 of the match and then adding five more goals in the second half. Florida State saw a three-match winning streak ended as FSU fell to 4-3 overall and 0-1 in the ACC.
Carolina opened the scoring when midfielder Raven McDonald gathered in a loose ball and scored from eight yards out just 1:26 into play. UNC then ran off three goals in a span of only 3:34 to put the game away. At 12:13, Kluegel scored the first of her two goals, blasting one in from 25 yards away, assisted by McDonald. At 14:04, freshman forward Susan Bush scored her first career goal scoring from 18 yards out after Meredith Florance had dribbled into the far corner and drawn the FSU defense to her. Then at 15:47 the roles were reversed as Florance scored from five yards out, taking a cross from Bush.
The Tar Heels continued to fire on all cylinders in the second half, scoring three times in the first 8:23. Kluegel scored her second goal of the contest, scoring on a rebound from 10 yards out after Florance was initially stopped by FSU goalkeeper Jamie Gurtov, who had 14 saves on the evening. At 52:02, senior defender Lindsay Stoecker scored from five yards away as junior defender Kalli Kamholz initiated a throw-in that was flicked on by Bush for Stoecker to finish. Just 1:31, later freshman Kim Patrick scored her eighth goal of the season from 10 yards out off a corner kick. Kamholz also assisted on the goal. Patrick has scored in all six Tar Heel games this season.
UNC scored twice more with senior midfielder Beth Sheppard tallying at 72:07, finishing a nifty passing sequence which included assists from Elizabeth Ball and Amy Whittier. The scoring was finished at 84:16 as freshman Leslie Gaston scored her first career goal, blasting a 23-yard shot into the net for the unassisted goal.
Carolina continues play Sunday against 12th-ranked Clemson at Fetzer Field at 6:30 p.m. The Tigers will be the fourth Top 12 opponent UNC has faced in the first seven games of the campaign.
