DURHAM, N.C. - Two days after suffering a heartbreaking loss to top-ranked Santa Clara, the No. 3 ranked North Carolina women's soccer team looked like a championship calibre team as the Tar Heels methodically took apart a very good team from Southern California 5-0 in the third game of the 1999 Duke adidas Women's Soccer Classic at Koskinen Stadium on the Duke University campus.
With the win the Tar Heels improved to 7-2-0 on the season while the sixth-ranked Trojans fell to 6-2-0. The Tar Heels will next be in action in the University of San Diego/Puma Classic in San Diego, Calif. next Friday and Sunday. The Tar Heels face UCLA at 8:00 p.m. P.D.T. on Friday and San Diego at 12:00 p.m. P.D.T. on Sunday.
The Tar Heels made quick work of USC, scoring three goals in a span of only 6:59 early in the first half of play. The Tar Heels lit up the scoreboard intially at 12:25 when Kalli Kamholz's header off a corner kick was saved by USC goalie Shaelyn Fernandes. But sophomore forward Anne Remy headed home the rebound for a 1-0 lead. Just 4:21 later, UNC scored again as freshman Kim Patrick, who came in after the first goal, scored the second goal, again on a rebound. Senior midfielder Lorrie Fair hit the right post with the initial shot, but Patrick was there to poke the rebound home.
At 19:24, Carolina's torrid attack struck again as junior forward Meredith Florance rocketed a bullet into the upper right shelf for a 3-0 lead. Both Patrick and Fair assisted on Florance's goal. The Tar Heels were not done in the first half, however, as Fair took a pass >from senior midfielder Beth Sheppard and dribbled through a host of Trojan defenders to power home the fourth goal.
Carolina added the last goal of the contest at the 86:31 mark as junior midfielder Raven McDonald finished off a nifty passing combination by sliding a ball past sliding USC goalie Lauren Arase into the lower left corner of the net. Remy and senior midfielder Rebekah McDowell assisted on McDonald's goal.
Carolina outshot the Trojans 29-5 and had a 9-0 edge in corner kicks. USC goalies Fernandes and Arase combined to make 12 saves while UNC freshman Jenni Branam recorded four saves.
