Senior forward LaQuanda Barksdale was named Preseason All-Atlantic Coast Conference by a vote of writers and broadcasters at the league's annual media day. Joining Barksdale on the team were Duke's Georgia Schweitzer, Georgia Tech's Niesha Butler and Virginia's Schuye LaRue and Svetlana Volnaya. Schweitzer was the preseason pick for ACC Player of the Year, while Duke's Alana Beard was the preseason pick for ACC Rookie of the Year.
Barksdale earned All-ACC honors last season as a junior, when she led the league in scoring with 17.6 points per game and in rebounding with 8.6 per game. She is one of three senior returning starters for UNC, along with guards Juana Brown and Leah Sharp. All three will serve as team captains for the 2000-01 season
In further balloting at the ACC media day, the Tar Heels were predicted to finish fourth in the conference this season, behind Duke, Virginia and NC State.
UNC opens the season on Nov. 17 at the University at Buffalo. The Tar Heels will host exhibition games at Carmichael Auditorium on Nov. 5 (Athletes in Action) and Nov. 9 (Basketball Travelers).
