Capel and Barksdale Sweep ACC Player of the Week Honors

North Carolina's LaQuanda Barksdale and Jason Capel each were named Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Week on Monday afternoon, giving Carolina a sweep of the conference weekly honors in women's and men's basketball.
arksdale was named ACC Player of the Week after scoring 27 points and grabbing 14 rebounds in Saturday's Tar Heel victory. She led UNC in both categories and added four assists, a block and a steal as the Tar Heels defeated Winthrop 71-48 to improve to 5-3 on the season.
arksdale leads the ACC in both scoring (19.4 points per game) and rebounding (10.9 per game). Saturday's double-double was her fourth of the season and her 27-point total tied her season-high scoring output.
Capel earns Player of the Week recognition as he became just the second player in Tar Heel history to record a triple-double. The 6-8, 230-pound junior from Fayetteville, N.C., scored 16 points, grabbed 11 rebounds and made 10 assists in the Tar Heels' 95-74 win over Buffalo on Sunday. Capel helped Carolina set the pace early in the game as he assisted on five of the team's first nine baskets. He also added two steals in the win and committed just one turnover.
With Capel's triple-double, Carolina became the first school in ACC history to have two different players record a triple-double in the same season. Brendan Haywood recorded the Tar Heels' first triple-double in a 67-45 win over Miami on Monday, Dec. 4.
Clemson's Tony Stockman earned the men's ACC Freshman of the Week honor and Duke's Rometra Craig earned the women's Freshman of the Week award.
After finishing final exams this week, the UNC women will take on South Carolina Thursday evening in Myrtle Beach, S.C., in the first game of the Carolina Classic. Tipoff is 7 p.m. and the game will be played at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center. The second matchup of the ACC-SEC double-header features Clemson and Auburn.
The Carolina men return to action on Saturday at UCLA. The game will begin at 4 p.m. ET and will be televised live by CBS.
