Sesay, Douglas Lead Carolina Track And Field In Day Two Of the Kroger Invitational

Chapel Hill, N.C. - The UNC track and field team competed in the final day of the Kroger Invitational in Blacksburg, Va. on Saturday. Ola Sesay led the way for the women's team placing second in the long jump with an NCAA provisional qualifying mark of 20-3. Sesay also finished 13th in the 200m in 24.92.
The women's team also had quality performances from their distance runners. Trish Nervo finished fourth in the mile in 4:58.72 and Kim Timberlake placed third in the 3000m in 10:08.11.
In the relays, the Tar Heels finished second in the 4x800m in 9:15.39 and fourth in the 4x400m in 3:47.40. On day one, the distance medley relay team won their event in 11:44.46.
Freshman Jill Pedretti had another strong day of competition in the throws. After finishing fourth in the 20-pound weight throw on day one, Pedretti finished sixth in the shot put with a throw of 45-05 Ľ.
On the men's side, the Tar Heels dominated the shot put, claiming three of the top four spots. Sophmore Ian Douglas led the way, winning the event with a mark of 58-8 ˝. Sal Gigante and John Ridgway followed in third and fourth. UNC also won the 4x800m relay in an outstanding time of 7:37.76.
In the pole vault, Brent Callaway finished fifth, clearing 17 feet at 17-0 ľ in the pole vault invite. Marcus O'Neal took fifth in the long jump at 23-4 ˝ and also finished 14th in the 200m in 21.76.
Freshman Joseph Handy was tenth in the 400m in 48.78, ZacVictor finished seventh in the 800m in 1:52.22 and Jonathan Dean tied for tenth in the high jump at 6-6.
The Tar Heels will now travel to the ACC Indoor Championships in Blacksburg, Va. for competition on February 18th and 19th.
