CHAPEL Hill, N.C.-The University of North Carolina opened with a 10-0 run and never slowed down in earning an 85-62 win over visiting Georgia Tech Sunday afternoon in Atlantic Coast Conference women's basketball action. UNC improved to 13-11 (5-8 ACC) with the win while Georgia Tech fell to 12-11 (5-8 ACC).
Georgia Tech won the teams' first meeting of the season, 55-44 in Atlanta on Jan. 13.
The Tar Heels shot 69.2 percent (18 of 26) from the field in the first half and a season-high 56.9 for the game. "In the first half, I saw the team out there that we've been trying to bring out all season," said UNC coach Sylvia Hatchell, whose team led 47-25 at halftime. The Tar Heels came into the game shooting 34.5 percent from the field in ACC games, 38.2 overall.
Junior forward LaQuanda Barksdale, who leads the ACC in scoring and rebounding, led Carolina in both categories on Sunday with 20 points and eight rebounds. She scored 13 of her points in the second half. "In the second half, we did not do a good job on Barksdale," Tech coach Agnus Berenato said. "You have to pick your poison. They shot well from three-point range in the first half but when we went out to defend that (in the second half), Barksdale stepped up."
Five UNC players scored in double figures. Besides Barksdale, junior guard Juana Brown, junior guard Nikki Teasley and junior center Jackie Higgins contributed 11 points each and freshman forward Jennifer Thomas added 10. Junior guard Leah Sharp chipped in nine on three three-pointers. Teasley also had a season-high 12 assists and no turnovers for the game.
For Georgia Tech, freshman guard Alex Stewart scored 14 points, grabbed eight rebounds and totaled six assists, all team highs.
The win was the 500th in the history of UNC's varsity program. Dating back to the 1974-75 season, when Carolina fielded its first varsity women's basketball team, the Tar Heels are 500-274, a winning percentage of .646.
UNC's next game is on Thursday, Feb. 17, when the Tar Heels host Wake Forest at Carmichael Auditorium. Georgia Tech hosts Florida State on Thursday. Both games tip off at 7 p.m.
