Heels Take 10th Straight Win With 6-4 Win Over ECU

Chapel Hill, N.C. -- The University of North Carolina baseball team defeated East Carolina 6-4 Wednesday afternoon in front of 2,005 fans at Boshamer Stadium. Carolina improves to 10-0 with the win and has now won 41 straight home games against non-conference opponents, a streak that dates back to the 1998 season. ECU falls to 6-2 with the loss.
Ryan Snare gave up three runs on six hits in six innings of work to earn his second win of the season. He also struck out four Pirate batters. Matt Tanner pitched three innings of relief to earn his first save. The freshman right hander gave up just one unearned run on four hits. ECU reliever Will Brinson suffered the loss, giving up three runs on two hits in a third of an inning to fall to 0-1 on the year. East Carolina starter Foye Minton pitched four innings, giving up three runs on six hits while striking out two.
ECU jumped out to the early lead with two runs in the second inning and another run in the third. Cliff Godwin and Erik Bakich both knocked in runs in the second, and Bakich finished the day 3-for-4 at the plate. Godwin, Chad Tracy and Lee Delfino had two hits apiece for the Pirates.
The Tar Heels got on the scoreboard in the fourth inning with Matt McCay's RBI triple to left center field. Ryan Blake came up next and knocked home McCay with a single to left.
Carolina added four more runs in the fifth. Chad Prosser led off the inning with a double to left, and Dan Moylan and Tyrell Godwin added RBI singles off of Brinson later in the inning. UNC also took advantage of two walks and two hit batters to take the 6-3 advantage.
Chad Prosser notched his third double of the season in going 2-for-4 at the plate. Moylan and Adam Greenberg also added two hits each for a Carolina team that saw eight of nine starters get at least one hit. McCay finished the afternoon with two RBI and Ryan Earey was hit by his eighth and ninth pitches in just 10 games.
The two teams combined to surrender 21 base runners. Carolina left 13 on base, while eight Pirates were left on.
The Tar Heels return to action this weekend with a three-game series against Seton Hall. Game times are set for Friday (3 p.m.), Saturday (1 p.m.) and Sunday (1:30 p.m.) at Boshamer Stadium.
