COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Virginia sophomore attackman Ian Shure (Lutherville, Md.) scored the game-winning goal -- his career-high fourth of the game -- with 11 seconds left in the second overtime to give Virginia (9-1) a thrilling 17-16 comeback win in the longest ACC Tournament game ever. The game, which was just the second overtime game in ACC Tournament history, also featured the most goals ever in a conference tournament game (33), breaking the record of 32 set by Virginia (19) and Duke (13) in 1994.
Virginia rallied with six of the game's final seven goals after falling behind 15-11 after UNC's Joel Miller (Worthington, Ohio) scored his second goal of the game with 14:47 left in the fourth quarter. Shure scored the game's next two goals at 12:21 and 11:36 to draw Virginia within two at 15-13. North Carolina (7-5) freshman midfielder Austin Garrison (New Canaan, Conn.) scored his career-best fifth goal of the game to give the Tar Heels a 16-13 lead with 7:34 left in regulation.
The Cavaliers came back with vengeance as they shut down the Carolina offense which registered its highest offensive output of the season with 16 goals. Virginia scored three goals in a span of just under two minutes on goals by Conor Gill (Lutherville, Md.), Jay Jalbert (Huntington, N.Y.) and Jason Hard's (Bridgeport, N.Y.) game-tying goal with 2:35 left in the fourth quarter.
The overtime sessions featured numerous chances for Virginia, which were stopped by North Carolina goalie Kris Blindenbacher (Narbeth, Pa.) on three occasions from point-blank range in the first overtime. lindenbacher finished with 17 saves.
Along with Garrison's career-day, Jeff Sonke (Birmingham, Mich.) tallied two goals and three assists for five points. Chase Martin (Owings Mills, Md.) had two goals and two assists for the Heels. For Virginia, Gill joined Shure with four points in the game. Virginia advances to play the winner of the No. 2 seed Duke vs. No. 3 seed Maryland game in the ACC Championship. That game will take place on Sunday, April 23 and be broadcast live on HTS at 3:30 p.m.
