Tar Heel Men Golfers Receive Bid To NCAA East Regional

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - North Carolina's men's golf team has been selected to participate in this year's NCAA East Regional. The 54-hole event will be played May 18-20 at Glenmaura National Country Club in Scranton, Pa. which features a par 71, 6,910-yard layout.
Each of the three regionals - East, Central and West - will feature fields of 27 teams and six individuals for a total of 81 teams and 18 individuals. From that number, 30 teams and six individuals will advance to the NCAA Championship to be played May 31-June 3 at Grand National Golf Club in Opelika, Ala. The exact number advancing from each regional has not yet been determined and will be based on the regional's strength of field.
Seven of the nine Atlantic Coast Conference teams will play in the East Regional. In addition to Carolina, the other ACC teams selected are Georgia Tech, Clemson, N.C. State, Duke, Virginia and Wake Forest. Georgia Tech and Clemson are ranked first and second in the nation respectively. Two players from Maryland received individual bids - Keith Unikel and Gary Mankulish.
The remainder of the field in the East Regional includes Rhode Island, Yale, Dartmouth, Penn State, James Madison, Richmond, Seton Hall, Augusta State, Georgia, Auburn, North Florida, South Carolina, Florida, Alabama-Birmingham, Middle Tennessee State, Mississippi State, Georgia State, East Tennesse State, Tennessee and Virginia Commonwealth. The remaining individuals receiving bids include Jedd McLuen of College of Charleston, Josh Broadway of Troy State, Alan Morgan of Louisiana State and Phillip Worthington of Bethune-Cookman.
The Tar Heels, who finished fifth at the ACC Championship, are ranked 32nd in the latest Golfweek/Sagarin Rankings and 40th in the MasterCard Collegiate Rankings. Senior Max Harris is ranked 14th in the individual MasterCard Collegiate Rankings and 16th in the Golfweek/Sagarin Rankings.
Harris captured the championship at The Ridges Intercollegiate last fall, the second collegiate championship of his career. He has posted six top 10 and seven top 20 finishes this year. Harris was selected third-team All-America in 1999 and was chosen second team All-America in '98. He was named to the All-ACC squad in '98 and '99.
