CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- North Carolina baseball standouts Tyrell Godwin and Chris Elmore have both been named to the 2000 GTE Academic All-District III team. District III is made up of all Division I schools in Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Florida.
Godwin, a junior history major from Council, N.C., is Carolina's starting left fielder and is among the team leaders in virtually all offensive categories. One of the most explosive players in the nation, Godwin is batting .367 with 10 home runs, 23 steals and a team-high 62 runs batted in. An ACC Academic Honor Roll and Dean's List student, Godwin is attending UNC on the prestigious Morehead Scholarship, the highest academic grant offered at Carolina.
Elmore is a senior business administration major from Virginia Beach, Va., who is in the midst of his finest overall season as a Tar Heel. A veteran member of Carolina's pitching staff, he is 8-1 with a 3.83 ERA this season and his career winning percentage of .857 (18-3) ranks second in school history. Last month, Elmore was UNC's male recipient of the Mildred McCaskill Award, given annually to the University senior who represents excellence in athletics, academics and community service. He was also honored by the ACC for his community service, and he was the baseball team's winner of the Athletic Director's Scholar-Athlete Award.
Godwin and Elmore are now eligible for the national academic team, which will be announced in early June.
