WILMINGTON, N.C.-Ann Hancock, an assistant coach at UNC Chapel Hill for the last eight years and one of the bright young minds in the women's collegiate game, has been named head women's basketball coach at UNC Wilmington.
The 29-year-old Hancock grew up in nearby Elizabethtown, N.C., attending summer basketball camp at UNCW for several years. The new Seahawk coach then enjoyed an outstanding academic and athletic career at Wingate University before entering the coaching profession.
She will be paid $57,000 annually, with a one-year contract.
"Ann is an excellent fit for our program and the Wilmington community," said Peg Bradley-Doppes, the UNCW athletic director. "She has been associated with one of the finest programs in the country, and will bring a high energy level to our department. Ann's ability to recruit and teach the game made her an outstanding candidate. She comes very highly recommended in the women's basketball ranks."
Hancock becomes the eighth coach in the 27-year history of the program. She succeeds Bernie Flax, whose contract was not renewed earlier this month.
"I'm very excited about the opportunity," said Hancock. "There's a lot of potential here at UNCW, and I'm very thankful to have this chance. I appreciate the fact that Peg believes I can get the job done. The eastern part of the state deserves a good women's basketball team."
Hancock, a graduate of East Bladen High School, has been part of Coach Sylvia Hatchell's UNC Chapel Hill staff since 1992. She has helped pilot the Tar Heels to an NCAA title in 1994 and to ACC championships in 1994, 1995, 1997 and 1998. UNC Chapel Hill went 20-13 in 1999-00, reaching the NCAA Sweet 16 for the seventh time in the last eight years.
The Seahawks posted an 18-12 overall record in 1999-00 and reached the championship game of the Colonial Athletic Association.
