CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - New North Carolina men's lacrosse coach John Haus added to his staff Monday by tapping Todd Cavallaro to be the full-time assistant men's lacrosse coach at the University. Cavallaro replaces Jim Buczek who resigned at the end of the season to pursue coaching and teaching opportunities in Athens, Georgia.
Cavallaro will serve as UNC's offensive coordinator, a position he held at Johns Hopkins University the past two years and at Washington College the four years prior to that.
A 1994 Johns Hopkins graduate, Cavallaro returned to his roots at Homewood in 1998 after serving for four years as Haus' top assistant at Washington College on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. Cavallaro served the past two years under Haus at Hopkins as the Blue Jays reached the NCAA semifinals each year. The Blue Jays were 20-7 during the time Cavallaro spent on the staff at his alma mater.
In addition to serving as Hopkins' offensive coordinator Cavallaro also directed the Blue Jays' man up offense and coached the team's faceoff specialists. Cavallaro served for four years as Haus' offensive coordinator at Washington College where he helped lead the Shoremen to a 47-21 record (.691) and three appearances in the NCAA Division III title game in 1996, 1997 and 1998. The Shoremen won the NCAA Division III men's lacrosse title his final season in Chestertown in 1998. In addition, Washington College also won a pair of Centennial Conference championships while he coached there.
Cavallaro, a native of Corning, N.Y. and 1990 graduate of Corning East High School, was a four-year starter in the midfield for the Blue Jays from 1991-94. He helped lead Hopkins to four straight NCAA Tournament appearances and Final Four spots in 1992 and 1993. He played in the North/South All-Star game after his senior year and won the Sidney C. Erlanger Trophy as the team's outstanding senior in 1994.
He was awarded the 1932 Team Turnbull-Reynolds Trophy for outstanding sportsmanship and leadership. In 1997, Cavallaro was inducted into the Corning Painted Post Hall of Fame.
