Carolina Volleyball Sweeps East Carolina

CHAPEL HILL - The University of North Carolina volleyball team defeated East Carolina 3-0 (15-6, 15-7, 15-4) at Carmichael Auditorium Tuesday night. The Tar Heels kept the Pirates to a .094 hitting percentage as Carolina produced a .307 hitting percentage.
Laura Greene posted .571 with 17 kills on 28 attempts with only one error. Nicole Reis registered seven kills and Liz Feldman and Malaika Underwood both added nine digs each. Middle hitter Holly Strauss recorded a career-high .375 hitting percentage and Eve Rackham tallied 32 assists.
Early in game one, the Pirates would answer each Carolina side out and the score was tied 3-3. One of Greene's seven kills took the Heels on a 3-0 run. ECU would only score three more points in the game as UNC rallied eight unanswered points and took the game 15-6.
Carolina jumped out to a 6-0 lead in game two before the Pirates would answer back with six unanswered points to tie the score 6-6. Reis hammered a kill to get the side-out and Carolina would go on another 6-0 run. Carolina allowed only one more point and a block from Rackham and Krista Buchholz would take game two, 15-7.
A determined ECU prolonged the first point as both teams exchanged side outs. Carolina would eventually go on a seven-point run led by kills from Reis and Greene to take a 10-1 lead. Defensively the Pirates struggled and Greene capped off game three and the match with one of her seven kills to win 15-4.
Lucinda Mason led East Carolina with 11 kills and five digs and Whitney Brawner with 11 digs. Lisa Donovan posted 22 assists for the Pirates.
The Tar Heels open the ACC season at home against Georgia Tech on Friday (Sept.22) at 7:00 p.m. at Carmichael Auditorium. Carolina will host Clemson on Saturday (Sept. 23) at 4:00 p.m.
