Tar Heels Men's Golfers Finish Ninth At Ping/ Golfweek Preview

North Carolina's men's golf team finished in ninth place with a 596 total at the rain-shortened Ping/Golfweek Preview. Georgia captured the team title with a seven-over-par 583 total. Brigham Young finished second four shots back at 587 while Clemson placed third at 588 and four teams tied for fourth place at 590 Texas, Northwestern, Arizona and Auburn.Bryce Molder of Georgia Tech captured the individual title with a four-under 140 total after rounds of 68-72. Kevin Haefner of Auburn finished two shots back in second place at 142 while Brigham Young?s Manuel Merizalde and Arizona State?s Jeff Quinney tied for third place at one-under 143.
A pair of freshmen led the way for the Tar Heels and Dustin Bray and Richard Treis tied for 19th place with three-over 147 totals. Rob Simmons tied for 34th place at 150 while Ramon Bescansa tied for 44th at 152 and Matt Crenshaw finished 77th at 159.
The 36-hole event was played at Duke University Golf Club which features a par 72, 7,045-yard layout. The field included the nation?s top 10 teams according to the MasterCard Collegiate Golf Rankings. Teams played one round on Monday and began the second round. However, rain chased the teams into the clubhouse so the second round was completed on Tuesday and the third round was cancelled.
