Heels Employ Second Half Solution Again to Race Past Vols

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - For the third time in four games this season North Carolina's #1-ranked women's soccer team fell behind by giving up a first-half goal to the opposition. And for the fourth time in four games the youthful Tar Heels launched a front frontal assault on the opponent goal in the second half of play.
It happened again Sunday as Carolina outshot Tennessee 23-3 and outscored the Lady Volunteers 5-0 in the second half as the Tar Heels defeated UT 6-1 before 2,720 fans at Fetzer Field. The win was Carolina's 22nd in a row over the past two seasons and it kept Carolina flawless in 2000 with a 4-0-0 record. Tennessee fell to 1-3-0 on the season.
The first half was played virtually evenly between the two teams with UNC outshooting the Lady Vols 9-7 and the teams going to the locker room tied 1-1. Both goalies were up to the test in the first half and they prevented both teams from denting the scoreboard even further. Tennessee's Ellen Dean had four first half saves and Carolina's Jenni Branam had five first half stops coming off her career high performance of seven saves in UNC's win over Virginia this past Friday night.
It was Tennessee which got on the scoreboard first as reserve forward Erica LaShomb won the ball from the Tar Heel defense in the left side of the box and lofted a soft shot over Branam into the far side of the goal at 39:44. It was the first time that the Lady Vols have scored against Carolina in four meetings.
The Tennessee score seemed to wake up the listless Tar Heels and Carolina answered back less than two minutes later. Junior midfielder Jena Kluegel got the first of her four assists on the afternoon as she crossed from the left wing to the head of sophomore forward Kim Patrick who had an easy put away at 41:27.
Carolina came out in the second half of play and took control of the match in the first 10 minutes. Just 3:55 into the second stanza, senior forward Meredith Florance sent the ball across the penalty area to Kluegel on the left wing. Kluegel then launched another nifty cross to sophomore forward Susan Bush, who headed home the eventual game-winning goal. Kluegel set up the Tar Heels' third goal as well as she was taken down in the penalty area on the left side. Florance then easily converted the penalty kick at the 53:28 mark.
Despite several more outstanding chances to score the match remained 3-1 until Carolina exploded for three goals in 1:30 just before the 10-minute mark. Freshman forward Alyssa Ramsey scored from six yards out with her left foot at the 77:26 courtsey of assists by Kluegel and Florance. Just 1:01 later Ramsey scored again as she took the ball about 10 yards inside the midfield line and went in to beat Dean on a breakaway from a tough angle. The crowd was barely back in its seats when 29 seconds after Ramsey's second score Kluegel stole the ball and fed Patrick for her second goal of the game into an empty UT net.
Kluegel's four assists were only one short of the school record for assists in a game. Emily Scruggs had five assists against Duke on September 20, 1979, April Heinrichs had five assists against Warren Wilson on October 29, 1983 and Pam Kalinoski had five assists against Central Florida on October 20, 1991.
The Tar Heels will now be off until they host the Nike Carolina Classic at Fetzer Field next weekend. On Friday, Duke play Oregon at 5 p.m. followed by UNC versus South Carolina at 7 p.m. On Sunday, September 10, Duke plays USC at 1 p.m. and the Heels meet Oregon at 3 p.m. Tennessee is off until next Sunday when the Lady Vols play host to UNC Asheville.
